Project Overview
The 174,000 SF polytrauma and blind rehabilitation center is one of five polytrauma centers nationally and the only one combining polytrauma and blind rehabilitation services under one roof, making it the largest federal facility of its kind. The design evaluates every element against sensory metrics to minimize barriers and integrate advanced accessibility and rehabilitation practices. Housing 24 polytrauma, 32 blind rehabilitation, and 12 transitional beds, the facility features natural light, non-institutional materials, and corridor railings supporting a “mobility without crutches” approach to therapy developed in close collaboration with staff to favor functional, calming design over unnecessary stimulation.
