Project Overview
This is a major prison for the Federal Bureau of Prisons site at the Sierra Army Depot in Herlong, CA. The project was awarded to the construction team after extensive review of design, cost, schedule and security considerations. The allowed design time was very compressed necessitating all the design professionals to exchange data files electronically. The project is a new site and is fully self-contained. Design constraints such as available water and power at the remote site, security demands, constructability, energy usage, redundancy and maintenance needs were dealt with successfully.
Mechanical Highlights
- FMB was the design engineer and the mechanical contractor.
- FMB performed an energy analysis per National Institute of Standards and Technology Building Life Cycle Cost to validate six different mechanical designs as part of the selection process. These options were considered with their associated budget impacts:
- Standard electric centrifugal chillers (.6 KW/Ton) and water tube boilers
- Standard electric centrifugal chillers (.6KW/Ton) and fire tube boilers
- High efficiency electric centrifugal chillers (.5KW/Ton) and water tube boilers
- High efficiency electric centrifugal chillers (.5KW/Ton) and fire tube boilers
- Gas absorption chillers and water tube boilers
